Loading a 40-tonne transformer onto a vessel is not simply a matter of finding a crane with enough capacity. The lifting points must be suitable, the centre of gravity understood, the cargo positioned correctly on board and the securing arrangement capable of controlling movement throughout the voyage.

These considerations are central to moving breakbulk cargo safely. Machinery, generators, fabricated structures and other large individual pieces may pass through several handling stages between the factory and destination, making the loading and securing plan an important part of the overall movement.

Breakbulk loading starts before the cargo reaches the port

The loading plan depends on accurate information about the cargo.

Confirmed dimensions and gross weight are essential, along with lifting points, centre of gravity, packing details and any restrictions on how the unit can be handled. Drawings and photographs can help determine what equipment will be needed before the cargo arrives at the terminal.

This is particularly important for machinery and irregularly shaped equipment. The heaviest point may not be in the physical centre of the unit, while lifting points may only be designed for loads applied from particular directions.

Incorrect or estimated information can result in unsuitable lifting equipment being prepared or the planned lift having to be reassessed at the port.

For complex movements, these requirements should therefore be established as part of the wider breakbulk shipping plan rather than left until the vessel is ready to load.

Why lifting points and centre of gravity matter

Where breakbulk cargo is stowed on the vessel

Once on board, the cargo needs a stowage position appropriate for its weight, dimensions and handling requirements.

Under-deck stowage provides greater protection from direct exposure to weather and seawater, which can be important for sensitive machinery and equipment. Access, hatch dimensions and the presence of other cargo can restrict what can be placed below deck.

Deck stowage can accommodate pieces that are difficult to position within a vessel’s holds and may simplify loading and discharge. The trade-off is greater exposure to weather and sea conditions.

Heavy cargo also places concentrated loads on the vessel structure. The selected position must therefore be capable of supporting the weight of the unit and any forces created during the voyage.

Protecting breakbulk cargo from the marine environment

Securing prevents movement, but the cargo may also need protection from the conditions encountered during the voyage.

Machinery and electrical equipment can be vulnerable to moisture, salt and corrosion. Depending on the cargo and stowage position, protection may include export wrapping, moisture barriers, desiccants, protective coatings or purpose-built cases.

The packaging needs to survive more than the sea passage. Cargo may spend time outside at the port before loading or after discharge and can encounter rain, temperature changes and repeated handling.

Deck cargo requires particular attention because it may be directly exposed to wind, rain and sea spray.

Photographic records can provide further evidence of cargo condition before loading, after securing and following discharge. This is particularly useful where several organisations will handle the equipment during the journey.

The level of oversight should reflect the value and complexity of the cargo rather than being applied identically to every breakbulk shipment.

Discharge needs the same preparation as loading

A successful loading operation does not guarantee a straightforward discharge.

The destination port needs suitable lifting capacity, handling equipment and space to receive the cargo. Any specialist lifting frames, spreader beams or other equipment required for discharge should be confirmed before the vessel arrives.

Onward transport also needs to be ready.

Large equipment may transfer directly from the vessel to a specialist trailer, while other cargo may be placed into temporary storage before final delivery. If the unit is oversized, the onward movement may require out of gauge cargo transport and associated route planning.

A delay at this stage can lead to additional vessel, terminal or storage costs, so discharge and onward delivery should be considered when the original transport plan is developed.
