What is a Wide Load?
A wide load is a vehicle and load that is wider than the normal UK limit of 2.55 m, or 2.6 m for refrigerated vehicles. Common wide loads include excavators, agricultural machinery, boats, modular and portable buildings, steel fabrications, tanks and bridge sections.
Width is often the hardest dimension to move. Roads, bridges, roundabouts, traffic islands and street furniture all limit how wide a load can go, and the rules tighten as the width increases: police notification over 3 m, an attendant over 3.5 m, a VR1 permit over 5 m and a Special Order over 6.1 m.
