Urgent Transports

    UN Classification for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The UN classification system for lithium-ion batteries ensures that manufacturers, shippers, and transport companies can handle and transport these products safely, reducing the risk of accidents.

    UN Numbers

The UN assigns specific numbers to identify different types of lithium-ion batteries:

    • UN3480: Lithium-ion batteries (shipped independently, without any device).
    • UN3481: Lithium-ion batteries contained in equipment or packed separately but with equipment.

    Hazard Class

Lithium-ion batteries are classified as hazardous materials in Class 9.

This class covers substances that may pose hazards not covered by other classes, such as environmental or fire risks. Lithium batteries are classified under Class 9 because of their potential for overheating, short-circuiting, and catching fire.

    Packaging Groups

Specific packaging requirements depend on the nature of the shipment:

    • Packing Instruction 965: For lithium-ion batteries (UN3480) shipped alone.
    • Packing Instruction 966: For lithium-ion batteries (UN3481) packed with equipment.
    • Packing Instruction 967: For lithium-ion batteries (UN3481) contained in equipment.

    Special Provisions

The UN classification includes special provisions (e.g., SP 188) that set conditions under which lithium-ion batteries may be safely transported. For instance, small lithium-ion batteries below a specific watt-hour rating (100 Wh per cell or 300 Wh per battery) may be exempt from certain regulations, provided they meet specific safety requirements.

Testing requirements (e.g., UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3) are also specified to ensure that batteries are safe for transport. This includes testing for altitude simulation, thermal cycling, vibration, shock, and other potential stress factors.

    Labelling and Documentation

Lithium-ion battery shipments must include proper labelling and marking, such as the “Class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods” label, which indicates that the package contains hazardous materials.

A lithium battery handling label warns handlers and transporters that the package contains lithium batteries and must be handled with care.

Documentation must accompany these shipments, detailing the type of batteries, the specific UN number, and any special instructions for safe handling.
